Brad Pitt, vlastným menom William Bradley Pitt, sa narodil 18. decembra 1963 v Shawnee, štát Oklahoma, USA, rodičom Bill a Jane Pitt. Je najstarší z troch detí, má jedného brata - Doug Pitt, narodeného v roku 1966 a jednu sestru Julie, narodenú v roku 1969.Svoje detstvo prežil v Springfield, štát Missouri, USA. Ako dieťa bol veľmi aktívny, na strednej škole sa zapájal do rôznych športových akcií (najmä basketbal, baseball, tenis, plávanie), ako aj divadelných predstavení.
Napriek tomu, že herectvo bolo vždy jeho obľúbeným koníčkom, po skončení strednej školy v roku 1982, sa rozhodol pokračovať v štúdiu na University of Missouri, Columbia, kde študoval žurnalistiku, odbor grafický dizajn a reklama. Školu nedokončil - chýbali mu iba dve záverečné skúšky - a v roku 1986 sa s $325.00 vo vrecku, odsťahoval do Los Angeles, California, kde sa pokúšal o hereckú kariéru (o čom jeho rodičia zo začiatku netušili).
Na začiatku si privyrábal ako reklamný maskot pre "El Pollo Loco", kde bol oblečený v kostýme veľkej sliepky :-) a takisto ako šofér limuzíny pre striptérky. Taktiež bol zamestnaný ako dozorca na plavárni. Zo zarobených peňazí si platil hodiny herectva, ktoré mu dopomohli k malým televíznym úlohám v "Growing Pains", "Another World" a v "Dallas". V seriály "Dallas" si zahral v piatich epizódach úlohu Randyho, priateľa dcéry Priscilly Presley, ktorú zahrala herečka Shalana McCall. Tento vzťah sa preniesol aj do reálneho života.
Brad pokračoval s krátkym účinkovaním na televíznej scéne. Zahral si v malých úlohách v "21 Jump Street", "Tales from the Crypt", "Thirtysomething", "Head of the Class" - kde spoznal ďalšiu priateľku, Robin Givens. S Robin sa rozišiel po šiestich mesiacoch, po nečakanom stretnutí s jej bývalým manželom, boxerom Mike Tyson.
Jeho filmový debut prišiel v roku 1988, keď bol obsadený do filmu Dark Side of the Sun, The (1997). V tomto filme si zahral Američana so zriedkavou kožnou chorobou, ktorý hľadá uzdravenie vo Východnej Európe. Film bol natáčaný v Juhoslávií a Brad si za sedem týždňov nakrúcania zarobil iba okolo 1 500 dolárov týždenne. Pred dokončením filmu sa v Juhoslávií strhol politický nepokoj, ktorý oddialil vydanie filmu. V roku 1996 bol tento film "znovu objavený" a v roku 1997 bol konečne dokončený a vydaný.
Jeho ďalšie účinkovanie bolo v nízko rozpočtovom thriller Cutting Class (1989). Práve počas nakrúcania tohto filmu spoznal herečku Jill Schoelen, s ktorou mal krátku známosť.
V roku 1990 počas nakrúcania televízneho filmu Too Young to Die? (1990) spoznal Juliette Lewis, a napriek tomu, že Juliette mala v tom čase iba 16 rokov a Brad bol o 9 rokov starší, obaja sa do seba zamilovali. Po skončení nakrúcania sa odsťahovali do Los Angeles, kde spoločne bývali.
Jeho "prerazenie" prišlo v roku 1991, keď bol obsadený do filmu Thelma & Louise (1991). Zahral si postavu J.D. a napriek tomu, že vo filme sa objavil necelých 15 minút, Brad upútal pozornosť významných režisérov.
S priateľkou Juliette Lewis si spoločne zahrali vo aj filme Kalifornia (1993). Napriek tomu, že počas filmovanie vyzeral ich vzťah stabilný, po skončení natáčania sa po spoločných troch rokoch ukončil.
Dva mesiace po rozchode s Juliette Lewis sa Brad dal znovu dokopy so začínajúcou herečkou Jitka Pohlodek, s ktorou mal krátky vzťah predtým, ako spoznal Juliette. Ale ani tentoraz ich vzťah nevydržal dlho a koncom roka 1994 sa definitívne rozišli.
V roku 1995 si zahral spoločne s Morgan Freeman a Gwyneth Paltrow vo filme Se7en - Sedem (1995). S Gwyneth sa po dvojročnom vzťahu, v novembri 1996 zasnúbili. Rozišli sa v júni 1997.
Na jar roku 1998 sa Brad začal tajne stretávať s herečkou Jennifer Aniston, zo seriálu "Priatelia". Zo začiatku obidvaja popierali svoj vzťah, ktorý oznámili verejne až o rok neskôr.
29. júla 2000 sa Brad Pitt a Jennifer Aniston zosobášili na Malibu, California. Manželstvo je zatiaľ bezdetné.
V roku 2002 si pohneval fanúšikov v Austrálií, keď na začiatku nakrúcania vedecko-fantastického filmu "The Fountain", odišiel z filmového pľacu. Počas nakrúcania filmu Fight Club - Klub bitkárov (1999) si ulomil zub, ktorý si nedal hneď opraviť, aby pridal väčší charakter jeho postave.
